LegRoom.net Updates

I should mention that I'm currently recoding parts of my theme to make it as XHTML complient as possible. Unfortunately, this may break compatability with older or lesser-known browsers. I'll of course be testing against as many browsers as I'm able, however I wanted to make sure everyone was aware that there will very likely be some page errors appearing here and there until the transition is complete. If you notice anything that doesn't look or work correctly, please let me know.

Also, I thought I'd mention that I added a bunch of new avatars. You can select one for your profile in the "Change your info" page. There's some cool stuff available, although, to be honest, I haven't found a use for the avatars yet.

One more thing. I'm sure you've noticed that David has posted quite a few articles on this site. Anyone/everyone else is also welcome to do so. If you see anything that looks interesting or noteworthy, just click the Submit News link to send it in.

Thanks, and stay tuned!

LegRoom.net Theme Updates

I'm currently in the middle of updating the LegRoom.net theme, as well as updating the layout of the home page. Although the theme looks almost identical at the moment, I've made extensive changes on the backend, reimplimenting it with another theme system that will make updates and modifications much easier in the future.

However, as a result of the changes, there are still a few minor problem with page layout, colors, etc. If you notice any such problems with the site, please let me know. Also feel free to send any feedback or ideas for improvement.

In the meantime, please bear with me while I complete this transition. Thanks.

Open Source Software / Free Software page

I finally got around to putting up an Open Source Software / Free Software page on my site.  It's intended to be a general resource for newbies and experienced users alike.  It's still under planning and construction, but so far I have four main areas:

  • What is it? - written to provide decent introduction to the whole concept of OSS and FS for those not already familiar with it
  • The Case for OSS - points out all of the benefits for using OSS/FS in the home and at work, including why it's a "Good Thing"  (still under construction)
  • List of Applications - contains a list of and links to the applications that I personally consider to be among the best OSS/FS available
  • Tips and Tricks - contains HOWTO-like documents on various topics that I've written to make things easier/better

This section of the website will pretty much be under permanent construction, with the apps list and howto section updated as often as I discover a new app or write a new document.  Of course, I'm always open to suggestions, so PLEASE e-mail me about anything you think could improve the site, including corrections, new apps, new HOWTO suggestions, etc.  Also, please feel free to drop me a line just to let me know what you think about it.

Add your favorite comic to DailyStrips

All of you should be familiar with my DailyStrips module. I chose the group of comics shown there each day simply because they're the ones I've always liked growing up. If you'd like to see your own favorite comics on there, just let me know. Choose from this list.

As a side note, I do intend on developing this module further so that each user can customize it to their liking, but that's going to take some time. PostNuke modules are especially rough (for me, anyway), and I haven't even figured out how to allow myself to set the comic selection list through the web yet. :-)

E-mail update

I've been customizing the webmail client, and I've added a LOT of functionaility and other miscellaneous options to it. Anyone with an e-mail account should check out the new options next time they log on.

Let me also just say that in general I'm not a fan of webmail clients. I've yet to find one with an interface I really care for, features all the options I expect in a good mail client, or that just plain doesn't suck. Squirrelmail (the webmail client used for LegRoom.net), though, is truly a great e-mail client that impresses even me. For those of you who don't know me well, that's quite an endorsement. :-) You can check it out for yourself at http://www.squirrelmail.org/. Enjoy!

Thanks

I just wanted to send a big "thanks" to Steve over at thisbeitz.com. He created the majority of graphics used on this site, as well as the LegRoom.net theme. He also helped numerous times with the many problems I've run into getting PostNuke configured correctly. So, thanks Steve, and be sure to visit his site.

LegRoom.net Updates

Good news: Most of the problems with the site have been worked out, and most of the content is now back online. Fully functional modules include: PostCalendar, DailyStrips, Downloads, News, Query Tools, Photo Gallery, Powered By, Server Information, SSH Applet, Submit News, Topics, WeatherCenter, and Website Statistics.

Bad news: Web Links are still down (argh!), and it'll take a long while to get everything back up. Open Directory is still completely down. Still have no clue what the problem is, but I'm working on it. Also, as I mentioned before, my photos are back up, but I still have to comment everything. Won't take too long once I get started.

Changes: I've added some security to the site. The Members List, Query Tools, and SSH Applet modules should now only be accessible to registered users (free to join, register here).

As always, suggestions are welcome.

Site Status

I've made a good bit of progress towards rebuilding this site. All of the previous modules are available again, as well as a couple new ones. Some cavets, though:

DailyStrips has been giving me trouble for the last week or so by only downloading about half of the strips it's supposed to. I've finally traced the problem to a perl upgrade I performed last weekend. I got the main problem worked out, but it still won't download the last two strips. I'm looking into it.

The Open Directory module isn't loading correctly. Working on this, but in the meantime it's unusable.

I uploaded all my pictures back to the photo gallery, but I still have to go back and comment all of them.

WeatherCenter seems to be still acting a bit flakey. The problem appears to be DNS-related, and since the root DNS servers are currently being DDOSed, hopefully that'll pass soon.

Finally, all of my Web Links were also wiped out. I'll be reentering them, but it'll take awhile to get all 156 or so back online.

As a final note, I'll soon start restricting access to certain modules (such as the SSH Applet and Query Tools) to registered members only, for security purposes. If you'd like to continue using this tools, please register.
